I did this bumblebee chart both in black
and white for filet crochet and also in color for crocheting colors in or
for
cross stitch. One more version: a black and white
chart with symbols for the colors, for those who don't have color
printers. The chart is adaptable for needlepoint,
knitting, beadwork, plastic canvas, even quilt blocks.
Black and White Chart for Filet Crochet
Did you know that the designer of
a pattern has the exclusive right to decide how that
pattern is distributed? See the definition of copyright
at the US Government Copyright Website.
To work the chart above in a
4 dc mesh, starting chain is 97 (includes
the chain-3 which counts as the first double crochet of first row).
The chart is worked by starting on the bottom right. Work first row
right to left.
Work next row left to right. Continue alternating row direction in this
manner as you work your way up the chart.
Starting First Row Double crochet in the 4th chain from the hook,
double crochet in next 6 chains (first 2 solid mesh made), chain 2, skip next 2 chains,
double crochet in the next chain (first open mesh made). Continue to follow
chart.
The background of the chart above is intended to be a random pattern of
blues so you can arrange the various shades of blue any way that strikes
your fancy. When working the chart in crochet, you could either
crochet the
colors in or you could cross stitch the design on a crocheted background.
To make a background in single crochet, chain 32.
Single crochet
in the 2nd chain from the hook, single crochet in each chain across. (31 sc)
Rows 2 - 31: Chain 1 to turn at the end of each row.
Single crochet in each stitch.
To make a background in crocheted afghan stitch, chain 31.
Work in afghan stitch for 31 rows.
Follow the chart to cross stitch the
design on in yarn colors or with multiple strands of
embroidery floss, with a large-eye yarn needle.
You could make this into a pillow, the front of a tote bag,
the center of an afghan or many other items.
You can use a variety of thread sizes or yarn weights to make this design from
the above charts. Just to give you an idea of finished sizes, when the chart is
done in filet crochet, with size 10 thread and a US size 7 steel
crochet hook,
the finished size will be about 7 inches x 7 1/2 inches.
When the bumblebee chart is
done in filet crochet, with worsted weight yarn and a US size I crochet
hook, the finished size will be about 27 1/2 inches x 28 1/2 inches.
Patterns that a designer chooses to make available as free patterns on the Internet
are protected by the same copyright laws as patterns that are purchased.
After seeing blatant copyright abuses by crafters on
Internet Bulletin Boards, on email discussion lists, posting copyrighted
patterns on their own web sites without permission and so forth, I realized that
education about copyrights is badly needed by crafters on the Internet.
More crafters all the time are making their own commitment
to honoring copyright laws. But there are still crafters out there who just don't realize yet
what it really means when they abuse copyrights; how illegally distributing reproduced
copies of copyrighted patterns so negatively impacts designers. Anyone who does their part to
help others get educated about honoring copyright law regarding patterns is doing a wonderful
thing for the future of designers being able to continue creating new patterns for publication.
Can crafters argue that if they don't
charge any money for reproduced copies of copyrighted patterns that they distribute in
any way (without permission), that copyright laws then wouldn't apply? Just remember that
by illegally distributing reproduced copies of copyrighted patterns without permission from
the copyright-holder, a person would be taking
revenue away from the designers/publishers by doing this, so money is
involved.
